                         MAGNET PROGRAM

                        “Our Schools of Choice”

The Knox County Magnet Schools Program provides an opportunity for families to exercise "School Choice" in the educational decision-making process.  Students have the opportunities to discover, explore, and refine their talents and interests while focusing on academic excellence. The Knox County Magnet Program consists of three elementary schools: Beaumont Fine Arts &Honors Magnet Academy, Green Math & Science Magnet Academy and Sarah Moore Greene Technology Magnet Academy; one middle school: Vine Middle Performing Arts & Sciences Magnet School; and one high school: Austin-East High School.

Some unique learning opportunities provided for students at each magnet school:

Beaumont Fine Arts and Honors Magnet Academy

Beaumont is the only elementary school featuring an Honors Program and a Museum Program for students. It partners with 7 area museums; East Tennessee Historical Society, Ramsey House, Knoxville Zoo, McClung, Ijams, American Museum of Science and Energy, and the Knoxville Museum of Art to create an innovative learning experiece for all students.

Students also participate in an enriching curriculum in instrumental music, vocal music, and visual arts and performing arts that supports classroom instruction.

Green Math and Science Magnet Academy

Green combines an interest in mathematics an/or science with real world investigations for the curious student. Green houses a math lab and a science lab that provides students the opportunities to explore, observe, predict, and write about experiences as they relate to the real world. They also partner with Americorp and the Discovery Center to support learning.

Sarah Moore Greene Technology Magnet School

Sarah Moore Greene Magnet Technology Academy incorporates technology as a tool into every aspect of learning. Students have the opportunities to utilize document cameras, digital cameras, video cameras, Active Boards, and participate in Video Conferencing. There is also an onsite television production studio where students operate daily news broadcasts that they prepare and present. It also has the following three technology labs:

  •  Instruction Lab-students learn computer and software operations that reinforce classroom skills

  •  Plato Lab-students work on an individualized, self-paced, enrichment program supporting classroom skills

  •  Advanced Computer Lab-students are exposed to various computer activities such as robotics, Claymation, Lego League and publishing

Vine Middle Performing Arts and Sciences Magnet School

Vine Middle Performing Arts and Sciences Magnet School offers middle school students unique opportunities to take their art to the stage.

Students participate in Drama, Dance, and Choral & Instrumental Music consisting of Modern Dance, Ballet, West African Dance, Djembe Drumming, Chorus, Show Choir, Marching Band, Orchestra, Piano, Handbells, Computer Art, Digital Photography, Lego League, and the Science Decathalon.

Austin-East High School

Austin-East High School is a natural step for the continuation of the performing arts and sciences offered at Vine Middle Performing Arts and Sciences Magnet School, as well as, a beginning opportunity for new students entering high school. Austin-East students have the opportunities to participate in many unique courses:

  •  Austin-East houses The Academy of Finance and Business which incorporates school-to-career opportunities, Knoxville business mentors, paid internships, college level coursework, and a rigorous curriculum in business, finance, and marketing.

  • In Performing Arts, classroom teachers are artists teaching technique, performance, and exhibition skills in the selected art form.  Students are able to produce their own original pieces of work and participate in school and community performances.

  • Information Technology begins in the television-broadcasting studio and culminates with the skills for professional editing and documentary production.  Motion capture, sound mixing, and recording provide unique experiences for students.

Thank you for such a wonderful application period for our program!
Letters pertaining to seats at each magnet school were mailed out on April 1, 2009 after the lottery. Kindergarten students that received magnet seats will need to be enrolled at their base schools. After enrolling students at their base schools, parents will need to contact the magnet school to set up an appointment to complete the enrollment procedures there as well. Parents of students already enrolled in Knox County will need to set up an enrollment appointment at the magnet school in which they received a seat to also complete the enrollment procedures.
